Summer mid-season anime impressions

(Crossposted from my journal.)

A bit late for first impressions, but I still feel the urge to get my thoughts out there.

Dekin no Mogura: The Earthbound Mole has ugly character designs and a ton of talking, and yet is a joy and a treasure and I can hardly wait for the next episode from week to week. This is an adaptation of a manga by Eguchi Natsumi, the author of Hozuki's Coolheadedness, and starts off with a similar mix of comedy and folklore geekery. But then it adds a lot more layers. First there's the giant supernatural cat antics, and then it turns out that Eguchi has been storing up a lot of thoughts about how girls and women are socialized to behave in contemporary society, and then there's the matter of the ongoing flashbacks to World War II.

Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show is great if you are well-versed in both the Cthulhu mythos and the anime death game genre, an overlap not likely to occur much outside Japan. The little problem with the subtitles in episode 1 has been ironed out and now my only complaint is that the new translator doesn't know how to spell Ticktockman. Because the show has borrowed him too, for some reason.

Sword of the Demon Hunter is getting into the big events of the late 1860s while shifting its tone ever further away from grimdark. It may be trying a little too hard at this point, particularly with a recent episode where it is implied that someone eventually reforms but we miss the most interesting part of their story.

Hanako-kun season 2 part 2 is still gorgeous to look at, but suffering badly from being watched the same day as Dekin no Mogura. It isn't dragging as badly as the previous cour, but it feels like it is ambling with unnecessary slowness toward an ending that can be seen a mile away.

I was all set to hate Ruri Rocks for the same reason the geology displays at some science museums annoy me. I hate when the exhibit is basically just "look at the pretty rocks" with no context for them. But this show actually wants to provide the geological context, so great! Plus it has really excellent character animation! Instead, it annoyed me by spending way too much time pointing at the camera at the chest and bottom of the adult lead, so I'm still not planning to watch a second episode.

Bullet/Bullet and Onmyo Kaiten Re: Birth Verse were okay for as far as I watched them (1 episode and 2 episodes respectively), I don't think I'd mind watching more, but I haven't gotten around to it, so clearly I didn't like them that much.

And nobody picked up the latest Cute High for streaming, so I don't know what I think of it.

Semipalmated Plovers

I spotted these cuties on the shore of Lake Champlain.

three small brown and white shorebirds with black collars stand on a muddy lakeshore

Semipalmated Plovers breed in Alaska and northern Canada, and winter on the sea coast in the lower US, the Caribbean, and South America. During migration they can be seen just about anywhere in North America.

A nearby beach had lots of surfers out. I liked the look of this tree high above them.

thestoryinside

If you're anything like us, you'll no doubt have a mountain of books that you just never get around to reading. Well, that's where [community profile] thestoryinside comes in - have someone choose your book for you!

The process is simple: join the community, and each month sign up to be partnered with a buddy, who will then choose a book from your 'to read' list. At the end of each month there will be a community post to discuss your thoughts on the book(s) you read!

However, we're putting a twist on the traditional 'pick for me' routine and each month we'll vote on what genre of book we'll be reading; now, of course this is open to personal interpretation, for example, if the genre is horror and you're not a big fan, you could go for a Goosebumps book, or even Twilight. There will be an opportunity in each voting post to ask any questions you might have.

Sunday

I woke up instantly from dead sleep at 4:30 AM because I heard, "mama." It was Clyde cat, getting a bit excited playing with a toy. He was actually saying ma meow, LOL. Mommy radar never leaves you. My kid is in his 20's and now 4 hours drive away.

Kid packed up the car and left Friday afternoon. He said everything is good, he is settled in at the new apartment, and classes start Monday morning.

Husband is visiting a relative in Arizona. He will not be back until Tuesday.

I have nowhere to go and not much to do...also no motivation to do anything. But the weather is lovely and not crazy hot today, so I am going to get off my butt and try to do some housework. I usually can't take naps during daylight but it might be needed today. But first, coffee and cake!

Clyde cat. He is very chatty.

Rocky. He is still good, there are fewer pics of him because every time he sees me he has to come running to say hi.

Breakfast

Lovely summer day with Dead Mater.

Whale Watching

I should immediately add that although we did see whales, I was not able to get any pics of them! Unfortunately the boat, which was not that large, was rocking too much to focus and the whales came and went too quickly even for the camera phone. Did catch the sea lions on the buoys but not even the ones briefly following us out of the docks as they were there and gone too quickly.

Nature diary

Yesterday I stood on the balcony at half past nine, when it was a little less hot outside then inside my apartment. I listened for bird calls, but there were none. Even the swallows and the seagulls seemed to be asleep already. Instead, there were bats!
They weren't easy to see, but as I was looking at the sky, I noticed those little dark shapes fluttering by. They looked almost like leaves in the wind, but clearly had a mind of their own, flying back and forth in front of me.
I wonder what species they were. It's impossible to tell. They could have been pipistrelles, given how small they were, but there's no way to be sure. During the day, they probably live in holes in the old trees beyond the lawn, or perhaps in little cracks in the walls of the building.
I hope they caught a lot of mosquitoes.

Hello again

I am still alive!

I am officially laid off from Nickelodeon. There was another round of mergers, with a new CEO. No new projects have been greenlit for my department during the turmoil, and although they tried keeping the artists as long as possible I have been out of work since end of June.

After jumping through all the hoops I am getting unemployment payments from the state. I am honestly surprised since I was a remote worker for the New York division, but Nick has been taking out all the proper taxes so I did qualify. That only lasts 6 months and it has already been a month...clock is ticking on the job search. I am on the internet every morning going through the job boards, but it is not easy. Last week I found one new listing, for a Canadian company that might be open to remote work. This week I have not found anything. Hope is that Nickelodeon will start new projects now that the top exec shuffling is done, but who knows how long that will take. Execs have a bad habit of tossing out favorite projects of previous department heads, and it was just a year ago that my last department was touted as the "way of the future" by the now ousted boss. All the politics are way above my pay grade. Us artists just want to work and pay the bills.

Finances are tight but okay for the moment. We have a bit of savings left. I am dusting off and selling some collectibles from the basement finally. Apparently animation cels are worth money now? I should have grabbed armloads back when I had the chance, LOL. Ebay has streamlined the process of selling stuff, so the most complicated part is finding correct sized cardboard boxes for shipping.

Kid is moving back out this weekend for the fall semester. I will miss having him around, but our grocery bill will be cut down to a third.

Cats are still cute, weather is dreadfully hot but the view is lovely and the fruit trees are doing very well this year. Apples are slowly turning red. Chickens love the wormy cherries. Pitting the cherries are a bit of a pain, but the birds get so excited for them that it is worth the trouble.

I am trying to get up the motivation to draw something again. I need to do a drawing for Magic Rat.

Here is hoping that a new job will be found soon...wish me luck!
