Films and books for the month
Mar. 1st, 2008 08:40 amOk here are the films and books I seen/read for this month. There are possable spoilers in the reviews.
I'm going to do the films first:
Jumper:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0489099/
This was a pretty good movie although there was a lot of things that could have been explained to make it better. Even so it was an enjoyable film and I'll defently be looking up the books the film was based on in the hope that some of theings not explained in the film are explained within.
Score: 3 out of 4
Divergence:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0455195/
Despite having solid acting from the three main leads I found this film to be pretty boring. There was a lot of talking and not much action and the talking wasn't really that interesting.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
Stealth:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382992/
Despite this film getting some pretty damn bad reviews I actully really enjoyed this film. It was pretty mindless but fun all the same and there was a plot development near the end that I have to say I didn't see coming which was a surprise because most of the film was pretty perdictable.
Score: 3 out 4
Alien Autopsey:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0466664/
This was a fairly amushing movie based on the true story of the guys who made the famous alien autopsey video. It was quite a fun film espically when they were remaking the video.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
Apartment 1303:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0841993/
This was a pretty amushing Japanese horror movie about a haunted apartment that made young women kill themselves. It was a pretty creepy movie with a few places that made me jump.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
Illusionist:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443543/
Despite the fact that I wasn't really interested in watching this movie I found it to be really enjoyable. There were a lot of twists and turns in the plot and it kept you guesssing about what was really happening until the very end.
Score: 3 out of 4
Moon Child:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365514/
This was a surprsing good movie though it did seem to drag a bit near the end but apert from that it was a fun gangster/vampire movie. The acting was pretty good considering it starred to J-rock stars.
Score: 3 out of 4
Next:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435705/
This was an OK movie with an interesting plot based on a guy who can see 3 minites into his own future. The film was wnjoyable but I really hated the ending of this film and it really spoilt the whole film for me.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
Blood and Chocolate:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397044/
I've never read the book that this film was based on so I can't how it compaires but I have to say I really enjoyed this movie. It was nice to see a film where the werewolves weren't evil or cursed in anyway. Another film where I really want to read the book it was based on.
Score:3 1/2 out of 4
Death Sentance:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804461/
This is a very bleak movie about what one guy does after his son is murdered by a gang. It is a very good film with a brillant performance from Kevin Bacon. It is also a really well shot film.
Score: 3 1/2 out of 4
Returner:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339579/
This was a really enjoyable si-fi movie envolving time travel and aliens. The acting from both the leads was excellent and the plot was pretty good as well. There is one brilliant bit about half-way through the movie that made me laugh and you'll know why if you see the film and are an anime fan.
Score: 3 1/2 out of 4
Big Nothing:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488085/
This film was also better then I thought it was going to be though that was helped by the fact Simon Pegg was in the film and he's pretty damn funny in everything I've seen him in. It was a pretty dark film even though it was a comedy.
Score 3 out a 4
Total so far 18/100
Now for the books:
Body Of Evidence by Max Allan Collins:http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/192247.Body_of_Evidence
I didn't find this one as enjoyable as some of the other CSI tie-in novels that I've read. Maybe because the case this time was less to do with murder and more about other things or if it was the way the characters were so quick to jump to conclusions about people based on their hobbies. Espically Catherine who should know better considering her past.
Score: 2 1/2 oit of 4
Witch's Canyon by Jeff Marotte: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/351017.Supernatural_Witch_s_Canyon
I didn't like this one as much as I did the first Supernatrual tie-in novel and I'm not sure why. The plot itself was pretty interesting but I felt that the dilouge was somehow missing something but I'm not really sure what.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
Sphere by Michael Crichton
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/455373.Sphere
I've read the book before(and seen the movie) but I really couldn't remember that much about it at all which is neither a good or bad thing in my opinion. I enjoyed the book as it was a pretty easy read and plot was fairly interesting and kept you guessing about what is actully happening to the people in the book.
Score: 3 out of 4
Peacemaker by Curtis W Casewit
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2767683.The_Peacemakers
This was a pretty old book and it showed it's age by the fact that the world had been destroyed in a nucler war in 1979(it made me laugh abyways). That said the plot was fairly interesting even if the exacution of said plot was pretty dull. Not one of the best books I've read so far rhis year but still fairly interesting.
Score: 2 out of 4
Lost Boy Lost Girl by Peter Straub
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19578.Lost_Boy_Lost_Girl_A_Novel
This was a well written book with a really werid plot that jumped about quite abit between the past and present that was a little annoying but didn't really change my enjoyment of the story itself.
Score:3 out of 4
The Hickory Staff by Jay Gordon and Robert Scott
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/564860.The_Hickory_Staff
I haven't read a portal fantasy in a long time and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book it also had a pretty good reason for there being a portal to another world on Earth. That said the beginning of the book was a little confushing as the other world used a different time systerm that wasn't explained until near the end of the book which made picturing characters ratther hard as I had no idea how old they were. Also another thing that annoyed me was that they liked to kill of characters almost always after they had fallen in love with one of the other main characters it got rather annoying after a while.
Score: 3 out of 4
Lessek's Key by Jay Gordon and Robert Scott
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2685894.Lessek_s_Key_Book_Two_of_the_Eldarn_Sequence
As a sequal to The Hickory Staff this one was a little more enjoyable then the last one but the annoying deaths contiued. I don't mind a few main characters deaths but when it happens every time a couple forms it gets old really fast.
Score: 3 out of 4
The Larion Senators by Jat Gordon and Robert Scott
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2841288.The_Larion_Senators_The_Eldarn_Sequence_Book_3
I enjoyed this one the most out of the three and for once there were no pointless deaths in this book. The ending made sense and was very satisfying on the whole and for once didn't end witht he people from Earth abanoning their new found friends once the final battle was over.
Score: 3 1/2 out of 4
Domain by James Herbert
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/397876.Domain
This is the last in The Rats series by James Herbert and the most silly out of the lot. I'm not sure if it's the dodgy reserch done on nuclear bombs and the aftereffects (espically as 5 bombs were dropped in the same place) or the beginnings of humanoid rats. It really wasn't scary at all and as usually only a couple of people made it out alive.
Score: 2 1/2 out of 4
